I mean why wouldn't they as the huge power they were at the time? They were far greater a force than the United States of America. But the whole time its was argued by the natives who had claimed independence from Spanish occupation...And these Mexicans whose territory they claim is -MEXICO well they werent even in California to defend it when the first Americans came to Northern California.The land was Indians and may I mention -NOT AZTECS...The Californico's fought and lost some battles to the United States while the Mexican Army was on the way.Since California was really-Indepent at the time,the Mexican Army had a hard time defending what it had wrongfully claimed as its territory and lost to the Americans and their Indian Allies and Allied Californicos.In Fact so much so the Americans reportedly defeated the Mexican army in most battles in California battles when they were outnumbered nearly TWICE as much everytime....So when someone tells you-The Border Crossed me,Unless they are California Indians--CALIFORNICOS THEY ARE COMPLETE LIARS WHO DO NOT KNOW THEY EVEN ARE.....ASK THEM WHERE THEY THINK THE NAME CALIFORNIA CAME FROM....
